album art for Backspacer, Pearl Jam's new album

so. the album finally came out. i’ve had my grubby little hands on it for a little over a week prior to official release*, and as such, i’ve had a bit more time to digest what’s available here. and at once, there’s a whole lot, and not very much. let’s talk about it.

———

any discussion about Pearl Jam right now must include some discussion of politics and the nature of politics in the music. PJ, and specifically at most times Eddie Vedder, were vociferous in their opposition to the past administration (remember that guy? President Bush? seems like a while ago, eh?). much of this would find its way, in one form or another, into the music. need an example? dig up the song “Bushleaguer” from the Riot Act album.

times have changed though, and with it, so has the overall tone of Pearl Jam. immediately, it struck me that there was an overarching sense of relief, as if the band had finally quit holding its collective breath and just let go. there’s a lot to be said for what feels like a renewed exuberance in the music, possibly an exuberance i’ve never heard on a PJ album. let’s face it: part of the chorus for the current single, “The Fixer,” has Vedder singing “yeah, yeah, yeah.” it’s a beautiful little glimpse into the musical release that winds up permeating the album.

and while “The Fixer” is the big song right now (and rightfully so, as it feels like it encompasses the feel of the album), Backspacer is full of other wonderful new nuggets that suggest a newly refocused path for the band. we can all agree on this point: Ed, Stone, Mike, Jeff, and Matt are older guys now, with families and spouses and other grown up things. all the trappings of “getting older” seep into the songs, including what i feel is the band’s first full-on love song, “Just Breathe.” that track is based on of some of the instrumental stuff Vedder did for the Into The Wild soundtrack, now with lyrics and fully fleshed out with strings and harmonies. it’s an incredibly reflective, visceral, and moving piece that directly reflects the space the band fills now, a space that is filled with “aging” (i use that term loosely) fans who now have multiple shifting priorities and interests: family, spouses, etc.

but lets not get carried away. “Just Breathe” is a bit of an anomaly on Backspacer. a greater chunk of the album is focused on bringing tightly composed guitars, drums, and vocals into taut, straight-ahead rock. “Supersonic” is the faster, harder-hitting offspring of the song “Mankind” from the No Code album… ok, offspring is generous; its more like a genetically modified clone, as if they re-listened to “Mankind” and wondered how they could improve on it. Backspacer is filled with this punkish speed at times and makes for a great driving force that recalls those moments of balls to the wall rock found in Vitalogy, Vs., and Pearl Jam.

but… its short lived.

the album is a mere 36 minutes long, and that’s where my biggest disappointment lies. eleven tracks, 36 minutes. that’s it. with every listen, i feel a bit more… ehhh… i don’t wanna say cheated, because it is a great album, but it’s just so freaking short that at the end of it all, i’m simply left wanting more, more, more. which isn’t necessarily the worst thing in the world, but with a truncated US tour  and probably another two years until the next album, it feels like just as Backspacer is about to take off, its grounded and the album ends.

that said: its a great addition to the Pearl Jam lexicon and yet another metamorphosis for America’s greatest rock band.

———

now on to a little op-ed about the album’s promotion and marketing…

i’ll admit, when i first learned of how PJ was going about marketing and selling Backspacer, i was more than a little confused, possibly turned-off. there’s a direct tie-in with Target stores…

yeah.

but, but… this is also the band’s first foray into completely self-releasing an album. no major labels, no outside money or executives pulling and/or pushing marketing, this is truly the first self-contained, self-promoted album PJ has done. i’ve seen the cries of “sell out!!” on various boards and commentaries, and after mulling it over for a while, i just have to say those cries are flat out wrong.

selling out would have been re-signing with Sony or a different major label. this is them, with total control over how they’re marketed and how their music is sold to the masses, and for the first time, i see Pearl Jam finally able to do things exactly how they want and on their own terms, and they’re going about it in all the right ways.

i downloaded my copy via iTunes, which was packaged as one of the new iTunes LP releases, and it’s really quite neat. with the iTunes download, came special access to download two full length concerts out of a possible ten choices. there are exclusive interviews with the producer, Brendan O’Brien, included with the iTunes LP. PJ is reaching out to their fans in a big way via Twitter and Facebook and making the most out of new social media and technology in ways that wouldn’t have been possible with ties to a major label. Target is a small piece (although probably the heaviest) of the marketing puzzle for this latest go’round. there isn’t an exclusive contract with the superstore (i’m looking at you, AC/DC); there was/is also an agreement to release to smaller Mom & Pop record stores in place to ensure equal access to sales.

Pearl Jam hasn’t sold out; they’re selling themselves, their music, and their product in exactly the way they want to, and if that’s not something to admire and appreciate in the music business, then i don’t know what is.

g’night.

[* i only downloaded the album from the webz after i placed my pre-order via iTunes]

that was big

March 25, 2009

it was a good day. yes it was.

———

some quick deets/recap:

  • jackie’s about 6.5 weeks along, not quite as far along as we first thought.
  • her OBGYN seems pretty awesome. she’s younger, she’s cool, looks like she could be Courtney Cox’s sister.
  • the office staff there… hm.
  • as exciting as the ultrasound was, it was a bit anti-climactic. we got to hear the heartbeat (!!), but only for like 5 seconds (??). yeah. we got our pictures, then “thanks, y’all can go now.” ugh. we’ll know better next time.

woo! a baby! in other news…

———

i got my big, giant Ten box set on Tuesday, and boy oh boy… it was well worth the wait. its massive and quite awesome. head on over to my flickr site to see pictures of it if you’re interested.

i plan to go a bit more in depth with a review this weekend, but i can tell you this much: the remastered sound is astounding. its like when i got The Beatles Love release last year, and hearing how incredible the quality and reworking of the music was, how everything was deeper, brighter, crisper than ever before, as if it was brand new.

that’s how the remaster sounds. it sounds like it was recorded in the past six months. they did some beautiful work on the remastering and the remixing, as well as the whole package. its just a thing of beauty.

———

also, if you’re a fan of The Decemberists, their new album, The Hazards of Love, is a monster. its louder, bolder, ballsier… just brilliant. its a concept album in the truest sense of the word and quite the hard rocker. definitely pick it up.

———

and LOSTwhoa. just… whoa. jackie and i have differing opinions on what exactly happens next, and while she’s probably right, i’m gonna stick to what i’ve got just for the sake of having a differing opinion right now.

(the following are spoilers and typed in white. if you’d like to read, simply highlight)

i mean, seriously?? Sayid shoots lil’ Ben?!? you can probably guess what the difference of opinion is: Jackie thinks Ben is still alive and i’m of the thought that no, he’s dead. she’s probably right. probably. i mean, that’s a huge freaking plot point that if true, means that adult Ben is gone. but what does that mean? like a Back to the Future sort of thing, where he dissipates out of photographs?
its a tough one to figure out, especially considering how this relates to the structure of time. if lil’ Ben really is dead, then isn’t adult Ben never supposed to happen? be alive and walking around? or are we gonna get another instance of the Island saving someone special, much in the way that a spinal surgeon shows up on the island to do surgery on Ben’s spinal tumor?
i’m having a hard time really wrapping my head around this, mainly for the reality of it: if what i saw was correct, Sayid shot lil’ Ben in the heart. in the freaking heart. and if not the heart, then his lung. and lil’ Ben, being about 12 or 13 years old, there’s no way, no way, his scrawny little pubescent body can handle that sort of trauma for a long enough period of time to be saved.
but if this was always supposed to happen, was part of the pre-destination of “history,”… ack, i dunno. Jackie’s probably right: lil’ Ben will be fine in the end.
burning questions: where is Vincent? are Sawyer & Juliet going to crap on everyone else’s plans to save their own? where the hell are Rose & Bernard??

(end spoilers)

that’s about all for tonight, folks. its been a long, big day and i’m ready to pack it in with my wife… and child! whaaaaaaaat!? yep.

a good monday

March 23, 2009

i had a long, long… long long long Sunday. a Sunday that didn’t allow me to crawl into bed until 3.45am Monday morning.

we had a brown out Sunday morning. long story short, i lost nearly an entire project because of it. i don’t have the iMac completely configured like i want it yet. InDesign isn’t setup to AutoSave (it is now). i also don’t have Time Machine going yet as i’ve yet to purchase an additional external drive for backups. all those things conspired against me.

so i got to work and just struggled through the whole day. it was awful.

———

but, i “finished” the project. still waiting on word from the project requester, and i’m still working on an insert for the brochure. otherwise, its good to go.

———

Jackie’s birthday present for me (an early one) was to buy me a replacement iPhone! it should be here tomorrow (or, today, depending on when you read this… technically, Tuesday). the girl i spoke with at Apple Care was fantastic. i’ve yet to have a bad experience with anyone there. its been some of the best customer service i’ve ever encountered. i never wish for my stuff to break or fail (and it hardly does), but when it does, i know i’m in good hands.

———

facebook still hasn’t imported my highly critical/negative entry about the changes they’ve made. maybe this post will push it through, but i’m tellin’ y’all… something smells fishy about it. i’ve never had an entry take two days to import. its all very… stinky.

———

speaking of facebook, i trimmed my friend list again today and cut another 50+ from my list. it feels good to do that. if you’re reading this, you’re likely ok.  :p

———

we had a really good night. nothing extraordinary. we had Five Guys for dinner, went to the Triple B, and bummed around Target. it was like something straight outta’ our college days: nothing to do, nowhere to be, just… hangin’ out. it was very nice.

———

lastly, my Ultra Mega Super Power Rangers Powered Ten reissue boxset made it to Montgomery! it’ll be in my sweaty fanboy hands tomorrow morning, and i cannot even express how excited i am about this. i wanted to go pick it up tonight, but UPS apparently just changed their rules regarding package pickups from their hubs. like, literally within the last two weeks.

oh well.

so tomorrow i can expect my Ten reissue and my new, uncracked iPhone to show up at around the same time.

and the remainder of the Ten tracks (in addition to “Alive”) will be made available for download & play on Rock Band 2 tomorrow, the 24th.

its gonna be a good day.

good night.

in which i get more excited about something

February 18, 2009
ultimate win

ultimate win

a little while back, i blogged about the impending re-release of Pearl Jam’s Ten album, and how excited i was about it.

today brings some very exciting developments that serve as a kick in the pants, eliciting something along the lines of drooling and even greater excitedness.

first though, plug your headphones/earbuds into whatever laptop or computer you’re at now. k, ready?

take a listen to this: its “Once,” the opening track to Ten. this is the original version as heard when it was first released.

now, listen to this: its the remixed/remastered version that debuted today at pearljam.com and will wind up on the re-release.

some of you will listen and roll your eyes. but i know that others of you out there are in my camp and will experience how incredibly better it is. i’m a PJ purist, and i am loving the re-tooling of this. i imagine that the remixed/remastered versions of “Alive,” “Evenflow,” “Black,” and “Jeremy” that popped up on the Rearviewmirror ”best of” album a few years ago will also show up on the re-release.

awesome awesome awesome.

why is Pearl Jam the best ever?

January 8, 2009

because 18 years on, this song still picks you up by the scruff of your neck and kicks your tail.

that’s why.

(edit: sorry about the first video not working. this one does.)
