the Savannah wrapup

March 4, 2009

things i learned…

  • John Wesley had a miserable time in Savannah (as i previously noted)
  • Wesley had no desire to make Methodism a full-fledged denomination (it wasn’t established until after his death)
  • the Washington Post is staunchly anti-religion (don’t ask)
  • The Methodist Church likes to re-brand things a whole bunch
  • Rethink Church is a really cool avenue they’re pursuing
  • we have a commercial (that never aired) that had a woman’s voice as the voice of God
  • Mike Dubose (our official photographer, not the coach!) is a really cool guy and has a fantastic talent
  • i need to work more on my social skills, insofar as opening up to folks a bit more
  • Holiday Inn at the Historic District has the best hotel service i have ever encountered. i mean that: ever
  • however… they have the worst WiFi connections ever. truly awful
  • Savannah is really cool place… provided its not ass-freezing cold all the time
  • Savannah has some god-awful rush hour traffic (oddly)

and that’s about all i can think of for now… on that.

other quick bullet points…

  • Jackie’s still in Florida; won’t be back until Monday. so that sucks.
  • after the release of new iMacs and Minis this past week, i am totally ok. according to multiple benchmark testings, there’s near-negligible difference (speed wise) between these new ones and the one i picked up last week. if there’s one thing i’ll miss out on, its the extra RAM that the new ones will take.
  • Mom has an iPod Touch now. the halo effect is an amazing thing.
  • this week’s LOST was pretty good. not nearly as mind blowing as past episodes, but still quite good. especially the OMGWTFBBQ moment about two minutes in.
  • as infuriating as it was to shoot with only our old point & shoot this past weekend, i wound up getting some decent stuff out of it. i just wish the shots i was able to get were a higher res. there’s so much noise and so little room to crop that it almost feels like a waste.
  • i’m rebooting an old quest to switch over to Aperture, leaving iPhoto behind. this is mostly because Jackie’s gonna have to switch over completely in the coming months, so i need to be on the same page. yes, i bought a book.
  • new Neko Case: fantastic. get it.
  • new U2: i’m still working this one out. its all over the map, sometimes in a good way, sometimes not. there’s much more attention being paid to the sound of the music than in the past couple of albums. it makes me want to pull some older material out and relisten.
  • i somehow got embroiled in a political debate (yes, on facebook; where else?). in my defense, though, it was more out of frustration that people still aren’t researching on their own behalf. subjects: the Fairness Doctrine, Abd al-Rahim, and health care. c’mon, folks. a 10-second Google search will learn ya a whole lot.

i’m exhausted.

night night.

the history of John Wesley in Savannah, GA

March 3, 2009

is quite interesting, actually. look it up!

———

its safe

its safe

my time here in Savannah is coming to a close soon. we’re sitting in the middle of a “lecture” on the history of John Wesley’s time in and around Savannah, GA. its quite… interesting. apparently, Mr. Wesley had some pretty awful luck.

anywho.

if there’s one thing i would change about this trip, it would be the weather. i mean, its been beautiful outside: clear blue skies, sunny… but the temperatures have barely broken 50 and the wind has refused to stop. to that end, though, there is some wonderful beer at the Moon River Brewing Company that works well to keep a growing boy warm.

at night, of course. after the meetings.

my favorite part has been popping down the street to the pub, having dinner and two or three pints, and just walking around town, iPod playing, camera in hand. i’ve been limited in my shooting ability this week by the constraints of our old point & shoot Nikon. i’ve had to get a bit creative to make it work like i want it to (and no, not in the good old fashioned, getting creative way) and have managed to get some decent snaps done.

LOOK AT MY PHOTOS.

———

i’ll be driving home tomorrow. i’m not particularly excited about the drive, but at least i won’t have to deal with snow. jackie’s still in Orlando and is at Animal Kingdom today shooting.

Orlando. Animal Kingdom. Good camera. we should all be quite jealous. she’ll be home next monday. that’s a long time from now.

———

tonight we’re eating at The Lady & Sons. i hear its got some connection to Paula Deen, so that’s good… right?

———

crazy people are no longer welcome at my table at Starbucks. for those that followed the Facebook or Twitter updates, you know what happened. it was awful. i dunno if dude was homeless, unstable, or what. but it was exceedingly uncomfortable, especially when he started to drum on the table with his hands.

blech.

good bye.

bonjour from un-sunny Savannah

March 1, 2009

(its a bit drizzly ’round here)

it has been a long, long, long day. as pretty as the snow was… it was an absolute nightmare to drive through. i knew it wouldn’t be easy, but once i got onto the back highways, i got as tense as i do driving through Friday afternoon Atlanta rush hour traffic. it was awful and i hope to never do it again.

i am quite glad to be here now. the hotel i’m at (a Holiday Inn) is probably as swank as a Holiday Inn gets. its right on the bay, and my room window faces the bay. its quite pretty, all lit up at night.

for dinner i strolled down to the Moon River Brewing Company. food was alright, but the Porter i had was fantastic. i cannot wait until this current session of Alabama legislation ends with a FTH victory. its such a shame we’re missing out on so many great beers that are just over the border.

what else, what else, what else…

  • i’m going to quit uploading stuff to YouTube. sure the hits and worldwide exposure are nice for the ego, but having the audio stripped from a video because of a copyright claim is just dumb. i’ve talked about it before, but today was the last straw. it was a minute and a half of snow from this morning, set to Red Hot Chili Pepper’s “Snow (Hey Oh).” so annoying.
  • i’ve really enjoyed the Safari 4 beta… BUT, i’m gonna have to put it away for now. it breaks WordPress. no completely, but i can’t add links to posts. USELESS.
  • have you check out the snow pictures yet? you haven’t!? then go and look now!
  • did i mention how awesome the drive was? no? well, take a look below! (btw, if the video doesn’t work here [same for my previous embedded video], its on facebook).

good. night.
